May 1st: Welcome to Croatia!

Welcome to Croatia!
We had a great start today with everyone arriving smoothly in Dubrovnik after their connecting flight.  And after a few days of unseasonal rain the weather has warmed up & is perfect for touring.  After meeting at the airport we boarded our bus & drove the 17 or so miles to Dubrovnik & our first hotel, the excellent Dubrovnik Palace Hotel.
After an hour & a half to freshen-up we met in the bar to head into town - not on our bus as intended but on the efficient city bus that departs from the hotel.  The bus dropped us right outside Pile Gate, the magnificent entrance to the Old Town & our first taste of Dubrovnik.
Everyone was suitably impressed by the beautiful Old Town, a maze of narrow alleys, a wide strolling street, & little corners & square.  After hitting the ATM a short walk took us up a grand staircase to a quiet square overlooked by a church, & on the opposite side our fantastic restaurant, Kopun (capon).
Dinner this evening was the excellent - we enjoyed a superb three course menu of traditional Croatian dishes, some dating back to the 16th century, accompanied by excellent local wines.
A short walk back through the Pile Gate to our waiting bus & we were whisked back to our hotel, tired but having had a great start to our Croatian exploration.
